Complete Bathroom Cleaning Guide: From Mould to Sparkling Tiles

Bathroom Cleaning Challenges on the Sunshine Coast

Our beautiful subtropical climate on the Sunshine Coast creates unique challenges for bathroom maintenance. High humidity levels, especially during summer, make bathrooms prone to mould growth, while hard water in some areas leads to stubborn limescale buildup.

This comprehensive guide will help you tackle every bathroom cleaning challenge and maintain a hygienic, sparkling space year-round.

Understanding Bathroom Enemies

Mould and Mildew

The Sunshine Coast humidity creates perfect conditions for mould growth. You will often find it:

  • In shower grout and silicone seals
  • On ceiling corners
  • Behind toilets
  • Around window frames
  • Under bath mats left on the floor

Soap Scum

That white, filmy residue on shower screens and tiles is soap scum - a combination of soap, body oils, and minerals from water. It builds up quickly and becomes harder to remove over time.

Limescale

Hard water deposits leave white, chalky buildup on taps, showerheads, and glass. Some Sunshine Coast areas have harder water than others.

Essential Bathroom Cleaning Supplies

  • White vinegar (your best friend for bathrooms)
  • Baking soda
  • Hydrogen peroxide (for mould)
  • Dish soap
  • Microfiber cloths
  • Scrub brush and old toothbrush
  • Squeegee
  • Rubber gloves

Shower and Bath Cleaning

Glass Shower Screens

For sparkling shower screens:

  1. Spray with equal parts white vinegar and dish soap
  2. Let sit for 15 minutes
  3. Scrub with a non-scratch sponge
  4. Rinse thoroughly
  5. Squeegee dry to prevent water spots

Pro tip: Squeegee after every shower to prevent buildup!

Tile and Grout

For clean tiles and white grout:

  1. Make a paste of baking soda and water
  2. Apply to grout lines
  3. Spray with white vinegar
  4. Let fizz for 5 minutes
  5. Scrub with a brush
  6. Rinse clean

Bathtub Deep Clean

  • Sprinkle baking soda over the entire tub
  • Spray with vinegar solution
  • Let sit for 15 minutes
  • Scrub with a brush, focusing on the ring line
  • Rinse thoroughly

Tackling Mould

Mould requires special attention, especially in our humid climate:

For Surface Mould

  1. Mix 1 part hydrogen peroxide with 2 parts water
  2. Spray on affected areas
  3. Let sit for 10 minutes
  4. Scrub and rinse

For Mouldy Silicone

Unfortunately, mould in silicone seals often requires replacement. However, try this first:

  • Soak cotton balls in bleach
  • Place along the silicone line
  • Leave for several hours or overnight
  • Remove and rinse thoroughly

Preventing Mould

  • Run exhaust fan during and 20 minutes after showers
  • Open windows when possible
  • Squeegee shower walls after use
  • Hang towels to dry properly
  • Fix any leaks immediately

Toilet Cleaning

Inside the Bowl

  1. Squirt toilet cleaner under the rim
  2. Let sit for 5 minutes
  3. Scrub with toilet brush, including under the rim
  4. Flush

Outside and Base

Do not forget these often-missed areas:

  • Wipe the entire exterior with disinfectant
  • Clean behind the toilet
  • Wipe the base where it meets the floor
  • Clean the flush button or handle

Vanity and Sink

  • Clear all items from the counter
  • Spray with all-purpose cleaner
  • Wipe sink, taps, and counter
  • Use a toothbrush around tap bases
  • Polish taps with a dry cloth
  • Clean the mirror with glass cleaner

Removing Limescale

For stubborn limescale on taps and showerheads:

  1. Soak a cloth in white vinegar
  2. Wrap around the affected area
  3. Leave for 1-2 hours (or overnight for heavy buildup)
  4. Scrub with an old toothbrush
  5. Rinse and polish dry

Weekly vs Deep Cleaning Schedule

Weekly Tasks

  • Clean toilet inside and out
  • Wipe down sink and vanity
  • Clean mirrors
  • Wipe shower screens
  • Mop floor
  • Empty bin

Monthly Deep Clean

  • Scrub tile grout
  • Deep clean shower screens
  • Clean exhaust fan
  • Descale taps and showerhead
  • Wash bath mats and shower curtains
  • Clean inside cabinets
